Exclusive interview with Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos) talking about his Spiral Deluxe project with Jeff Mills and the new álbum ‘The Love Pretender’.

Gerald Mitchell: Um Visionário da Alma Eletrônica de Detroit

Gerald Mitchell is one of the key figures in the evolution of Detroit’s electronic music scene. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, and DJ, he is best known for his work as the leader of Los Hermanos, a project that blends techno, house, jazz, and soul, creating an unmistakable sound that resonates with the deep musical history of the Motor City.
I had the honor of having him as a special guest at my “Future Visions” Event that took place at Spkrbox Detroit and our meeting resulted in this exclusive interview with DJ Sound Brazil.
A Jornada do Los Hermanos
Mitchell started his career influenced by gospel, funk, and jazz, elements that later defined his signature sound. His involvement with Underground Resistance (UR), the influential Detroit techno collective led by Mad Mike Banks, was a crucial turning point. From there, he launched Los Hermanos, a project that embraced a more melodic and soulful approach to techno, incorporating Latin rhythms and intricate melodies.
Some of his most celebrated tracks include:

Spiral Deluxe: A Collaboration with Jeff Mills
Beyond Los Hermanos, Gerald Mitchell has also been a key member of Spiral Deluxe, a live improvisational electronic jazz project led by the legendary Jeff Mills. This project combines the spontaneity of jazz with the futuristic soundscapes of techno. As the keyboardist, Mitchell brings his soulful touch to the group, contributing to a sound that is deeply organic yet unmistakably electronic. Their EP “Tathagata” (2018) highlights this innovative approach, merging Mills’ rhythmic precision with Mitchell’s lush harmonic progressions.
Mitchell’s ability to blend the past, present, and future of Detroit’s sound has solidified his place as a true visionary, keeping the spirit of techno alive while constantly pushing it forward.

Entrevista com Gerald Mitchell
(Interview with Gerald Mitchell)
(Los Hermanos has a unique sound blending techno, jazz, and Latin influences. What was your main inspiration for developing this style?)
(Since the beginning of my music career I started off playing Gospel music in my father’s church and also playing in neighborhood bands playing rhythm and blues but I was also listening to different genres of music that would play on the radio like blues, jazz, jazz fusion, funk, soul, rock, pop etc… and before techno, I also would listen to latin radio stations and learn to play some of the riffs because I really liked the energy but when I was introduced to techno by underground resistance I created my sound as the deacon aka soul saver using gospel elements in my music, sonone day I decided to skip my 9 to 5 job at General Motors and went to visit submerge and there was Mike Banks and Dj Rolando in the studio trying to create a track for Rolando to dj and Banks asked me could I play latin music and I said yes I’ve experimented with those rhythms so he asked me to play so the first part you hear on Knights of the Jaguar was a riff. I had been practicing so I used that and both Mike and Rolando liked it. Then after the success of Jaguar we all had created a formula myself and Rolando then asked Mike Banks to launch the label Los Hermanos and from there I knew the formula to combine latin riffs with gospel chords and Los Hermanos was born.)
(At first I didn’t care much for techno or house because it was repetitive and mostly out of tune but after many attempts I couldn’t get the formula then one day
I recorded Soul Saver and then Hard Life with my cousin Ron Mitchell who sang the lead and background I did less and just kept a simple groove and It worked so I begin listening to what other artist were doing but I wanted to add something different because dance music was becoming easy and fun for me but most of all it taught me how to break the rules of music and concentrate on the groove and accept the fact that everything doesn’t have to be in tune which sparked my interest in learning how to dj.)
(Basically the Idea was Jeff Mills he wanted a group that would just improvise and because we both loved jazz and jazz fusion we started experimenting but abandoning the idea of how jazz is constructed with everyone playing a lead line and then each member soloing over the chord progressions Jeff felt we should just play what we felt with no particular lead lines and become more expressive, so that gave me the freedom to create different chord progressions and changes on the fly and most times that we have recorded it only takes us a couple of days to create a song with no particular direction then Jeff would edit all the parts that were recorded but I usually keep the same formula which I previously discussed. )
(Detroit’s electronic music scene has a deep legacy. How do you see its evolution today?)
(It’s interesting and I’m always searching for that new sound but then it gets a bit boring when I hear the same clock from song to song and that’s because people are using the computer to think for them and using the same presets but as for me I am always digging deeper in creating a different quantization in my tracks and I understand what works for me is the lift in a song using strings and thick chords always building on the groove and it has always worked on dance floors however I am still searching for more inspirational patterns rhythms and sounds but keeping that funky soulful element combined with a soul sample or sound at times)
Bem, estou no estúdio desenvolvendo ideias.

(What future projects are you working on, and what can your fans expect next?)
(Well I am in the studio coming up with ideas and sometimes I will turn off the music and listen in silence to create the next vision for my label Los Hermanos which you can find at: https://spiraldeluxe.bandcamp.com/album/the-love-pretender and the latest project that I am on is Spiral Deluxe titled “The Love Pretender” release date 3.14.24
it’s been a long winter so the songs I have already nin the can I will begin finalizing those for future releases however I am never in a rush because I rather concentrate on quality rather than quantity the mission is to make a mark in a person’s life that will never be erased and can endure the test of time long after I am gone so I am thankful for my family , friends and fans for the support and encouragement over the years.
Musically Yours G.Mitchell aka Soul Saver of Los Hermanos)
